Checking Coinbase $COIN for my first buys of $BTC and $ETH. I first bought $BTC in June 2014 and $ETH in August 2017. Although I also recall buying $ETH prior to 2017 on Bitstamp (now owned by Robinhood) and transferring to Coinbase in 2018. Bitcoin is often referred to as Digital Gold and $ETH as Digital Oil.

On January 23, 2025 the president signed an executive order “Strengthening American Leadership in Digital Financial Technology”. In addition new leadership at the SEC has softened the regulatory framework for digital assets. As the US federal debt has just surpassed $37 trillion, countries and companies are starting to build Bitcoin/Ethereum Reserves.

I believe in a portfolio allocation of around 10% to a combination of 75% $BTC and 25% $ETH. I also own a small position in $SOL.

I previously owned other coins like Chainlink, Avalanche, Doge, Render, Cosmos, Polygon, Polkadot, SUI but have sold them all as I don’t see the value in these coins even while their networks may be valuable. Definitely stay away from meme (i.e. fraud) coins.
